Prefecture of Pieria

The prefecture of Pieria is one of the most beautiful prefectures in Greece, with rich history and natural wealth. With the imposing Mount Olympus, the famous castle of Platamonas, the magnificent beaches with crystal clear waters and the vast farmlands, the prefecture of Pieria is undoubtedly one of the richest in natural beauty, and not just in Greece.

The prefecture of Pieria is a particularly blessed place, in the shadow of the emblematic Mount Olympus, with rich history and natural wealth. The mythical mountain from which the gods of ancient Greece emerged meets the golden sandy beach on a vast coastline where the green combines with the blue to create stunning landscapes. Agrotourism, local gastronomy in traditional villages, the wealth of archaeological finds, Byzantine
monuments and monasteries, cultural events throughout the year, the unsurpassed tranquility of the mountains and the cosmopolitan character of the coastal villages are the elements that make up a unique experience for everyone.

The prefecture of Pieria is also famous for its excellent cuisine, rich in fine local ingredients, such as the famous mussels of Pieria, a very nutritious product with a unique and incomparable taste.

Mussel production in organized cultures in the prefecture of Pieria is one of the largest and it is significant that the annual capacity in Pieria exceeds even 11,500 tons. Among the main factors for this quality are the special soil and climate conditions in Pieria and the great know-how of local producers.

In addition to the exquisite quality, mussels are an important part of Pieria’s gastronomy and local cuisine, and can be enjoyed in many combinations, such as stir-fried (saganaki), steamed as an appetizer, with rice pilaf and in many other creative ways.
